How Equans is eliminating diesel from the ground up at Lima's new terminal
Jorge Chávez International Airport (AIJC) is undergoing one of the most significant infrastructure expansions in Latin America. Its new terminal, among the most modern in the region, was designed with fully electric ground power from the start.
Since 2025, Equans has been contracted by Talma, one of the leading ground handling operators in the region, to operate and maintain the airport's electric ground power infrastructure under an 8-year agreement.
The challenge
When an aircraft is parked at a gate, it typically runs its Auxiliary Power Unit (APU): an onboard engine that burns kerosene to supply electricity and air conditioning on board. In a busy terminal with dozens of gates in simultaneous use, this is a significant and largely avoidable source of emissions.
The new terminal at Jorge Chávez required a fully electric alternative from day one:
- Eliminate APU kerosene consumption across all active boarding gates
- Supply aircraft with stable, high-quality power meeting commercial aviation standards
- Maintain continuity as the terminal is delivered in phases
- Reduce ground-level emissions for passengers, airlines and staff
These systems supply stable electrical power directly from the airport's grid, reducing the need to run the APU for electricity while parked at the gate.
The solution: eliminating the need for APU operation entirely
Equans operates and maintains 400Hz Ground Power Unit (GPU) systems across 26 boarding gates at the new terminal, with expansion to 36 gates planned as the concession is delivered. These systems supply clean, stable electrical power directly from the airport's grid to every parked aircraft, eliminating the need for APU operation entirely.
Key commitments include:
- Full operations and maintenance of 400Hz GPU equipment
- Coverage of 26 gates from contract launch, scaling to 36
- 100% electric supply across all active boarding positions
- Ongoing uptime management and technical support
Our value
- FOR THE ENVIRONMENTDiesel-powered ground power units are replaced by electric 400Hz systems at the gate, directly reducing emissions.
- FOR AIRLINES400Hz electric supply is more stable and consistent than APU-generated power.
- FOR GROUND TEAMSThanks to the insulation of the equipment, technical staff benefit from more space and a safer working environment, which improves operational efficiency.
This contract strengthens our position as a trusted partner in airport decarbonisation worldwide. We currently operate across 150 airports worldwide, including Amsterdam Schiphol, Brussels Airport, Geneva International Airport, Bordeaux-Mérignac and Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau.
Jorge Chávez is one project. Across 12 airports worldwide, we are helping the industry decarbonise, one gate at a time.
