The challenge before us
- In France, female engineering students represent just 16.6% in transport services and 19.9% in electricity (Le Figaro Étudiant, October 2024).
- In the information and communication technology (ICT) domain, only 17% of students are women (#SheLeadsTech Barometer, 2025).
- The proportion of women in ICT professions across Europe amounted to just 19.4% in 2024, a figure unchanged since 2019 (European Commission, MESR-SIES, 2024).
Globally, women make up just 26% of professionals in computer science and mathematics, and only 15% in engineering (UNESCO, 2024). This situation can hinder innovation and competitiveness. Diversity is a powerful driver for addressing the challenges of the future.
Did you know ?
Algorithmic biases play an invisible but significant role in this trend. By analysing vast quantities of historical data, algorithms replicate and reinforce pre-existing societal biases.
In recruitment, algorithms may favour male candidates for technical roles, perpetuating inequalities. On social media, algorithms limit women’s exposure to scientific and technical content, instead displaying traditional representations of their role in society.
Our commitment
At Equans, we believe in the power of diversity. We’re launching #BreakTheCode, a movement to:
- Raise awareness about algorithmic biases and their impact on women’s representation in scientific and technical careers.
- Promote diverse and inclusive content on social media.
- Counteract the trend and strive for gender balance.
